First Post of the No. 12 Diaries - 9:22 AM
**The concept of the No. 12 Diaries first began in the fashion I do most things - randomly. Actually, it happened quite naturally, after a sequence of events that is. For starters, inspiration came after acquiring an iPhone, after taking the no. 12 bus from work, and thats what really spurred me to write. Because man, am I riled up. And thats when I accept the reality that I am now, officially, a Singapore OL. This is how everyone lives, and so I shall too.
The bus ride home is when I can collect my thoughts, after many hours in an office, to recount what had happened, and dream about what might happen next **
I now understand why many people, despite Singapore's incredibly well connected roads, aspire to be a car owner, hopefully sooner rather than later thankew very much. In fact, most warn against having a car - after all, it's so impractical, they say! Oddly enough, these wise words are usually spoken by the ones who own cars. Let's see....Apart from the ginormous cost of the car that makes you just kick yourself for not being born into the Cycle&Carriage family, throw in exorbitant gas prices, add in the ERP and parking costs, and you've just bought yourself a swanky, zippy, huge load of debt. However, having a car i like dating the wrong guy. Everyone but you can see that you're committng to a huge mistake, but you are just too dependent on it to not have it around you.
But maybe, just maybe its not because of materialistic reasons that people want to own cars... perhaps its because they are, like me, sick of mysterious cabs that vanish at 1130pm only to miraculously surface at 1201am; or inconsiderate bus drivers (I'm glaring at you, no. 12 single deck bus uncle). It's like they've clear forgotten what driving school first teaches you - anticipifreaking-tation.
Ok, maybe I'm too harsh. Maybe it's not really what I think...maybe it's not because they have such dull lives of going about the same route every other hour that they absolutely have to amuse themselves by seeing people slam into windscreens. Maybe they just need larger windscreens than the ones they currently have.
Whatever it is, the average OL cannot afford a car in Singapore, regardless of how many designer handbags she owns. Thus comes this whiney blog post. Other than that, the iPhone makes a great writing tool, except when Mr. No. 12 makes it impossible to work the touch scren, and thats when I want to yell vulgarities that my upbringing so unfortunately frowns upon.
And that's how I know I'm back in Singapore.
