Eating in Asia - 9:04 PM
- Eating in a hurried unconscious manner without savoring the flavors is like receiving a love letter from the earth and not reading it -Hello World.
I've spent the last 4 nights working like a madperson at the Auction office as expected, spending about at least 8 hours in front of the computer each day working on the catalog. But I have to say, its worth it cos ITS DONE! Now we just have to tie up all loose ends, and hope for the best next Saturday.
GHBO had a special event today. We thought it would be cool if we can get Chef Sherwin, the Professor who teaches the cooking class and lead chef at the Kellogg Center (the MSU Hotel) to whip up some exotic food for us. Well, he did way more than that.
He started off with an introduction of today's topic - The Pacific Rim, which is the theme of this year's student run black tie dinner - Les Gourmet. It will be featuring dishes from, well.. the Pacific Rim, consisting of countries such as China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand etc. He gave a presentation on what people in these societies ate (rice), how a mother calls the family to dinner (CHI FAN LE!) and how the religions in asian societies influnence what we eat. He also told us how the Americans wanted Chinese people to build railroads in the U.S, and how the American laborors fell ill after drinking the polluted water but the Chinese workers feeling fine cos they BOILED WATER TO MAKE TEA. (see I tell you asians are smarter) Very interesting, I must say. But of course the best part was the food sampling!
We had yakitori, sweet and sour pork, lotus root as a side dish (lian ou), this amazing seaweed that felt like chup chae, kim chi, fried rice, egg rolls (MMMMM), and pork buns... all made from scratch! tai hao chi le... I am VERRRRYYYY happy.
Perhaps one of the best things about my major is that we get to eat and drink. Just gotta know how!
