5 childhood dishes - 8:36 PM
0 comment(s)
OK lets see... 6 fab men from TV... done that...5 flawed men from TV....check... what other list is there to compile?

hmmmm.....oohhhh!!! I got it! the meme from Andrea! She posted a tag on the 5 favourite/most memorable childhood food/dishes... HEHHEE... will be fun, so I shall proceed to write it out now.

#1) Potato-carrot-pai guat soup

DING DING DING!! Ok its not exactly a childhood dish cos we still have it now and then (but my very health conscious Mom has permenantly traded in her carnivorous tastebuds for MISO soup. BAHHHH)
People used to ask me when I was little, 'HOW COME YOU GROW UNTIL SO BIG AH?! what you eat ah?! very li hai leh the thing your Mother feeds you... you steal your sister's food isit... why she so small you so big?!' ...so You see eh, last time young right, cannot say 'SCREW U' though thats how u feel inside. Adults eh, sometimes I swear their brains are not properly screwed in their heads. SO insensitive de... so kids bu shi ren isit? kids mei you gan qing isit? -kao-. ANYWAY, to those who wanna know...the recipe for a TALL, STRONG kid is POTATO-CARROT-PAI GUAT soup with rice. thats all. no secret, no lies, best of all.. NO FRILLS! SO easy to cook and so nice to eat. I used to eat rice mooshed up in the soup.... when there's no soup, I'll just pour water into the rice, mix it and eat it while imagining that its the PCP soup. Guess that explains for my unsophiscated tastebuds. =P

#2) Yu Gan You (Cod liver oil)

PUI! I HATED THAT. esp the White one... remember the jingle 'cheng zhang, cheng zhang, wo yi cheng zhang, SHUI BI SHUI GAO?! si de duo ni yu gan you.. pei ban wo yi qi cheng zhang...' towards the end of the song, they will go 'MMMM wo xi huan ta!' PLZ LA. Xi huan ni de TOU lor! WHO will xi huan THAT CRAP?! ORange is still acceptable but that WHITE one?! It was the worst thing to swallow! *hurhur. not a food but brings back memories. bad ones. shudders*

#3) Ah Jia's carrot cake

Ah Jia (meaning Wai Po aka maternal grandma in Hakka) used to make these really amazing carrot cakes. The kitchen was her di4 pan2 and no one was supposed to invade her space. (think that explains why my Mom can't cook until about 7 years ago...) Actually, she didn't have to worry about her status as lead Cook being threatened cos NO ONE in the house COMES CLOSE to her culinary skills. Ah jia will grind the white carrots until they came out thinly shredded to make into kueh form. There will be hay-bee, mushrooms, mince pork inside the carrot cake. I used to love it SO much, that I ate so much until one fateful day when I puked carrot cake. That signalled the last of Ah Jia's carrot cake. Its childhood cos Ah Jia passed away 7 years ago when I was 13, and haven't had it ever since.

#4) MBS Fish cake + Samosa

2 things I miss MOST in Primary School... the 10c/slice yu bing. the slices are not those pathetic ones u have with your fishball mee... its those DAMN THICK kind. hahahha. 10c/piece leh!!! And while in the old School, we will all queue up at the side door and tell Uncle we want '10 yu bing, abit chao tar' cos chao tar ones are NICE! Some Pri 6 students will threaten Uncle.. 'UNCLE... TEACHER WANTS 10...FASTER!' Uncle will then pick 10 pieces of the THICKEST yu bings for the kid...I used to eat 50c Mifen with 5 Yu bings.. ONLY $1. where else can you get such cheap food?!!
Samosas for 10c each. E'NUFF said.
*hmm sometimes I wonder if I miss the primary school FOOD or the PRICES?*

#5) Cedar XIAO JI TUI!!!!!!!!

Go ahead...ask ANY Cedarian what is their favourite snack in the Cedar Canteen... UNANIMOUS decision. XIAO JI TUI from Cai Fan stall! I think we betta get those drumsticks checked for addictive substances... how else will it explain our undying love and loyalty to it? We've graduated for 4 years and counting and STILL dui na ge xiao ji tui NIAN NIAN BU WANG! Everytime the Cedar comrades and I remimscence back abt our blue-shirt-grey-tied days, XIAO JI TUI will always pop out in our conversations. (yu pian comes a close 2nd) MANNN *smack lips*

OK. now to tag:

SHIYUN (though i doubt she can make up her mind about ONLY 5 food), CHLOE, PEISHAN, RUOXI, KELLY!
